However, this is not a perfect world, because people are not perfect. In 2020, consumers returned an estimated $428 billion in merchandise, approximately 10% of total U.S. retail sales in 2020. Of those returns, roughly 5.9 percent were fraudulent, equating to $25.3 billion. It is very critical for importers to view inspections as a necessary part of their supply chain planning. Pre-shipment inspection is even a must to avoid fraud product and economic loss.
